Diabetes Herbal Medicine

Diabetes herbal medicine can be used as an added therapy when you are already taking conventional medicines for Type 2 diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, as the body does not produce any insulin, you have to take insulin via injections. The aim of herbal treatment is to gradually reduce your dependence on allopathic treatment and perhaps wean you off the remedies altogether, particularly if your blood sugar levels are not very high or you are in a pre-diabetic state.

Different Types of Diabetes Herbal Medicine

Herbal remedies come in various delivery systems: you can take the natural plants and herbs according to the way they are prescribed – powdered or cooked or mixed with water; or you can take various herbal remedies that come in capsule form. If you are finicky about taste and smell you may well prefer to take capsules which are easy to swallow and are made from refined extracts.

Traditional medicine systems of different countries have popularized various cures, the most popular ones being traditional Chinese medicine, African remedies and the Indian system of Ayurveda. Many other traditional medicine systems also have their own medicines which have been traditionally used as herbal remedies comprising various herbs, root, barks and leaves. Diabetes herbal medicines have fewer side effects, are low cost and quite effective, especially in Type 2 diabetes.

How Effective is Diabetes Herbal Medicine?

Numerous studies on the effects of various herbs on diabetes have been published, but often the data has not been sufficient or the effects not very clear cut. A study titled, ‘Systematic Review of Herbs and Dietary Supplements for Glycemic Control in Diabetes’ conducted by Gloria Y. Yeh, MD, David M. Eisenberg, Ted J. Kaptchuk and Russell S. Phillips analyzed data of various published studies on the effects of herbs on controlling sugar levels. They concluded that while blood sugar levels did reduce significantly, more and better studies were required to verify the claims, but that doctors should have an open mind on the subject.

Among the effective herbs named in this study are:

  • Coccinia indica
  • American ginseng
  • Momordica charantia
  • Nopal
  • l-carnitine
  • Gymnema sylvestre
  • Aloe vera
  • Vanadium

These and other herbal remedies work by decreasing sugar levels in the blood and reducing the need for conventional medicines. In fact, even allopathic medicine often has an herbal component – the common medicine, metformin, prescribed for Type 2 diabetes and derived from Goat’s Rue or French Lilac, a flowering plant. However, there are more than a 100 herbs and leaves which have hypoglycemic properties.

Diabetes Herbal Medicine as Combination Pills

Herbal Medicine as Combination PillsMany pills are available for diabetes control and often these are more effective than plants because they are made according to guidelines and have various combinations of the most effective herbal remedies. Among the popular herbal medicines are

  • Glucolo – manufactured by VitoHerbs, this stimulates insulin release and reduces absorption of glucose in the digestive systems thus having a double impact.
  • Optimum Blood Sugar Support – by Nulivlife is a mixture of different Chinese herbs for regulating blood sugar levels and increasing insulin sensitivity.
  • DiabRite – this combination medicine promotes glucose metabolism and improves the function of the pancreas.

Pills or capsules of single herbal remedies for diabetes are also available in case you want to narrow down as to what affects you best.

As diabetes is a serious disease, it is important to check with your medical practitioner and not self-prescribe. If you want to try diabetes herbal medicines, it is a good idea to go to a licensed practitioner of herbal medicines or natural cure as most herbs reduce blood sugar levels and when you are also taking conventional treatment, you may find your sugar levels going dangerously low. It is also vital to monitor your sugar levels at different times when you are starting any new treatment or therapy.
